Sleep is of vital importance to how we feel and how well we function on a day to day basis.
Here’s some useful tips on how to get the best sleep possible.
Some of the supplements mentioned in tip #10 are available for purchase in the My Best Years shop. You will find them in the ‘Supplements’ section, but have a look around – there’s a range of supplements carefully selected for their quality, price and usefulness to those in the 50+ age bracket.
1. Stick to a Consistent Sleep Schedule
- Why: Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day helps regulate your body’s internal clock, promoting more restful sleep.
- How: Try setting a regular bedtime, even on weekends. Consistency is key!
2. Create a Relaxing Bedtime Routine
- Why: A calming routine signals to your body that it’s time to wind down, making it easier to fall asleep.
- How: Consider activities like reading a book, taking a warm bath, or practicing relaxation exercises like deep breathing.
3. Limit Caffeine and Alcohol
- Why: Both caffeine and alcohol can disrupt sleep, especially later in the day.
- How: Avoid caffeine after 2 p.m. and try to limit alcohol, as it can cause fragmented sleep.
4. Optimize Your Sleep Environment
- Why: A comfortable, quiet, and dark room helps create the ideal environment for sleep.
- How: Make sure your bedroom is cool (around 65°F or 18°C), dark, and free from distractions like bright lights or noise. Invest in a good mattress and pillow for support.
5. Watch Your Evening Meals
- Why: Eating heavy meals late at night can disrupt your sleep.
- How: Try to finish meals at least 2-3 hours before bedtime. Opt for light snacks if you’re hungry, such as a small piece of fruit or a handful of nuts.
6. Stay Active During the Day
- Why: Regular physical activity helps regulate your sleep patterns and can improve sleep quality.
- How: Aim for 30 minutes of moderate exercise during the day, such as walking or light stretching. Just avoid intense workouts too close to bedtime.
7. Limit Screen Time Before Bed
- Why: Blue light from phones, tablets, and computers interferes with melatonin production, the hormone that helps you sleep.
- How: Try to turn off electronic devices at least 30-60 minutes before bed to allow your body to naturally prepare for sleep.
8. Manage Stress and Anxiety
- Why: Stress and worry can make it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep.
- How: Practice relaxation techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, or yoga to calm your mind. Journaling before bed can also help release anxious thoughts.
9. Stay Hydrated – But Not Too Much Before Bed
- Why: Dehydration can make it hard to fall asleep, but drinking too much fluid before bed can lead to waking up to use the bathroom.
- How: Drink enough water during the day to stay hydrated, but try to reduce liquid intake an hour or two before bed.
10. Consider Supplements or Natural Remedies
- Why: Certain supplements and herbs have been shown to promote relaxation and improve sleep quality.
- How: Melatonin, Magnesium Glycinate, Ashwagandha or chamomile tea may help you sleep better.
